About this service
Landscape design
Peter Howe Design develops landscape design plans for residential and commercial properties across Loudoun, Clarke, and Frederick counties. We work on new installations, revitalizations of established properties, and phased plans that allow owners to build out a landscape over several seasons. Our design background runs deep, with horticultural work in this region going back to 1981.
A landscape design plan is the starting point for everything else. It accounts for the terrain, the soil conditions, the drainage, the sun exposure, and the client's practical goals for the property. When the design is done well, the irrigation, the hardscaping, and the planting all work together from the beginning rather than being added on top of one another later.

What we offer
Residential landscape design
We design plans for single-family homes and residential estates, from modest suburban lots to larger rural properties. The design accounts for how the family uses the property and what the land can realistically support.
Commercial landscape design
We design plans for commercial properties, including offices, retail developments, and institutional sites. We balance visual quality with practical maintenance requirements and local ordinance considerations.
Planting and greenscape plans
We produce species selections and placement plans that account for the soil type, the light conditions, the mature size of each plant, and the seasonal interest. We choose plants suited to the site conditions rather than working against them.
Design documents for stonework and grade changes
We prepare detailed design documentation for hardscaping features, retaining walls, and grade changes that need to be coordinated with the planting and irrigation plans. These documents support installation and permitting.
Site revitalization
We assess and redesign established properties that have declined or drifted from their original intent. We identify what is worth keeping, what should be removed, and what the property needs going forward.
Phased design for larger properties
For larger projects, we structure the plan in logical phases, and each phase delivers a complete result on its own. That allows owners to invest over time without leaving the property in an unfinished state at any stage.

We design landscapes that look at home on the property from day one
A well-designed landscape does not look like it was recently installed. The plants are sized and placed so they read correctly now, and so they will continue to read correctly as they mature. The hardscaping is proportional to the structure and the site. The irrigation coverage matches what was actually planted. Each element connects to the others from the beginning.
We treat the irrigation, the hardscaping, and the planting as one unified system rather than as separate tasks handled in sequence. That integration is what produces landscapes that hold together over time and that ask for reasonable maintenance to keep them doing so.

Common questions
Landscape design questions
How much does landscape design cost in northern Virginia?
Design fees vary with the size of the property, the complexity of the site, and the scope of the plan. Smaller residential projects and larger multi-phase commercial plans sit at different price points. Contact us to describe your property and your goals, and we will give you a clear picture of what to expect.
How long does a landscape design project take from initial conversation to final plan?
A straightforward residential design typically runs four to eight weeks from the first site visit through plan delivery. Larger or more complex projects, particularly phased designs or commercial sites, take longer. We give you a realistic timeline at the outset based on your specific project.
Do you handle installation as well as design, or design only?
We handle both design and installation, and many of our clients work with us through both phases. Keeping the same team on the project from the design through the installation reduces errors and keeps the intent of the plan intact.
Can you design for an existing property that needs revitalization?
Yes. Site revitalization is a significant part of what we do. We assess what is worth keeping, what has declined beyond recovery, and what the property needs in order to function and look well going forward. The result is a plan that builds on the existing structure of the property rather than starting from scratch.
What is included in a landscape design plan?
A landscape design plan typically includes a site assessment, a planting plan with species selections, design documentation for any hardscaping or grade changes, and notes on installation sequence. For phased projects, we structure the plan so that each phase delivers a complete, functional result while leaving room for the work that comes later.
