Peter Howe Design is a landscaping company with decades of architectural and horticultural experience. We originally specialized in gardens that looked as though they had been there for many years. Since then, our work has expanded to include pools, fire pits, waterfalls, patios, and other built features, along with commercial landscapes, revitalizations of older properties, and personal retreats.
We specialize in both landscape design and project management, so the full scope of a project stays unified from concept through installation. Tradition, natural materials, and the careful use of newer methods all inform what we design for your land.
History
We were established in 1981. Over the decades, our company has created garden settings through stonework, site grade changes, and plantings that work together as one design. The professional relationships we have built along the way support the level of care we put into every landscape we touch.
Virginia chapter
Since designing his first parterre garden in 1981, Peter has offered only high-quality materials and craftsmanship. Today, Peter Howe Design is based in Loudoun County, Virginia, and Round Hill has been our home since 2024.
We design irrigation systems around plant health, topography, and the way your household intends to look after the yard — sized for properties across Loudoun County and the Northern Virginia piedmont.
We coordinate irrigation layouts with grading, mulch beds, and long-term upkeep, so that water supports the greenscape rather than working against it.
Each zone is sized and positioned around what is planted there, so coverage is efficient and the system works with the soil profile rather than compensating for a poor fit.

Water features are a meaningful part of the work we have done over the years. We design and build waterfalls, ponds, and other water features as part of the unified outdoor plan, alongside patios, fire pits, and pool surroundings.
Whatever the built portion of your landscape looks like, the design and the oversight remain with us from start to finish.
Water features are integrated into the overall design from the start — edges, stone choices, and the surrounding plant material all support one another rather than being added in sequence.
Stonework and masonry have been part of our work for decades. We design and build brick patios, paver terraces, dry-stacked and mortared stone walls, and stone steps suited to the Virginia climate — built to hold up through freeze-thaw cycles and fit the character of the property.
Patios, walkways, terraces, retaining walls, and steps are detailed at the design stage, so the proportions, materials, and drainage all align with the rest of the landscape.
We address grading, drainage, and frost movement at the drawing stage, so the installed stonework holds up through weather and time without settling or shifting edges.

We can prepare drawings, details, and project management checkpoints for your project, so that the stonework, plantings, and built-in elements work together as one design rather than as separate pieces.
We prepare the level of documentation each project requires — from concept sketches through to construction details used by the trades on site.
When engineering, permits, or specialty trades are involved, we take on the coordination role — keeping materials, sequencing, and installers aligned with the landscape plan throughout.
We work on commercial entrances, revivals of older estates, and residential retreats across Loudoun County, Clarke County, and Frederick County. In every case, our goal is a landscape that looks at home on the property from the first season onward.
Describe your landscape

Whether you are looking for one specific flower feature or a broader planting palette that softens the edges, reinforces sight lines, and keeps the garden layered through the seasons, we can help.
Discuss plantingsWe provide dependable mowing, pruning, irrigation checks, and seasonal resets for residential and commercial properties across Loudoun County and Northern Virginia — so your lawn and beds stay well-kept through every season.
Ask about lawncare

We design, build, and care for landscapes on residential properties across Loudoun County and the surrounding areas, from smaller suburban yards through to larger rural estates. The same team handles the design, the installation, and the ongoing care.
The plan accounts for how the household uses the property, what the site can realistically support, and how the landscape will mature over the coming seasons.
We handle the design, the installation, and the follow-on lawncare and maintenance — so the property is looked after by people who understand what was planted and why.
We design, build, and care for landscapes on commercial properties across Loudoun County and the surrounding areas, including office parks, retail and mixed-use sites, HOA common areas, and institutional grounds. The plan is built for year-round use and a routine maintenance schedule.
The plant choices, the hardscape materials, and the irrigation layout are selected together, so the property reads well from the street and remains reasonable to maintain through the year.
We design for year-round use and a routine maintenance schedule, so the landscape functions reliably for the people who use the site every day.

Selected work

Stone and water step down a slope, and the pool sits within a hardscape that follows the contours of the land.

A fire area sits near water with views that extend past the property line. The result is a clear place to gather outside in the evening.

Paving, planting, and the pool itself were designed together so the yard reads as a single destination rather than a feature placed into a lawn.

Walkways and plantings divide a larger property into distinct areas, with color and texture that shift through the year.

Strong tree specimens and a healthy ground layer are the result of steady, informed care over many years.

A waterfall and pond are set into the landscape with a stone footbridge, designed as part of the surrounding grade and planting plan.
How we work — Loudoun County, VA
We listen to your goals for use, upkeep, budget, and style. Then we read the sunlight, grading, soils, drainage, and what already grows well on the site.
Stonework, grade changes, built features, irrigation, planting, and long-term care are all considered together, so that the parts of the plan support each other instead of working at odds.
When engineering, permits, or specialty trades are involved, the drawings and the sequencing keep the installers aligned with the landscape plan.
We stay close through installation. We can also manage lawncare and seasonal maintenance afterward, so the landscape continues to develop the character it was designed for.
